Supporting connection and communication, one note at a time

Music Therapy

Music Therapy is a playful, creative form of therapy that uses music to support children and adolescents with a wide range of needs. At Amaze, our Registered Music Therapist (RMT) works closely within our multidisciplinary team to provide therapy that helps children build confidence, connect with others, and explore their inner world in a safe and supportive way.

What is a Registered Music Therapist?

A Registered Music Therapist (RMT) is a university-trained allied health professional who uses music intentionally to support a person’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. RMTs study music, psychology, physiology, and therapeutic techniques, and are registered through the Australian Music Therapy Association.

How can Music Therapy support your child?

Music Therapy can help children and adolescents to:

  • Develop emotional regulation and calming strategies

  • Build self-confidence and explore self-identity

  • Strengthen relationships and social skills

  • Safely explore emotions and develop awareness of different feeling states

  • Learn new ways to engage and collaborate with others

  • Cope with trauma, change or life transitions

  • Support communication, both verbal and non-verbal

  • Improve body awareness and coordination through music and movement

  • Build self-advocacy and confidence through choice-making and self-expression

Why is Music Therapy so powerful?

Music activates multiple areas of the brain at once, making it a uniquely effective tool for supporting development, learning, and emotional wellbeing. It also brings joy, playfulness, and connection—elements that make therapy feel natural and fun for children and teens.

Through musical experiences, children have the chance to express themselves, connect with their strengths, and explore who they are in a way that feels safe and affirming.

What might a Music Therapy session include?

Music Therapy sessions are highly individualised and may include:

  • Instrumental play

  • Singing and vocal play

  • Movement to music

  • Songwriting and improvisation

  • Live music paired with relaxation

  • Music-based play using toys and props

  • Exploring music and technology (e.g. GarageBand)

  • Music and visual art activities

  • Creating personalised playlists

  • Learning about healthy music use (especially for teens)

Working together with your therapy team

Music Therapy works beautifully alongside other therapies, such as Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, and Physiotherapy. At Amaze, your child’s therapist will collaborate closely with your broader therapy team to support holistic, family-centred care.
