Speech Pathology

Children with speech and language delays or disorders can have difficulties understanding and communicating their wants, needs or feelings. Children can also present with oral motor difficulties, swallowing issues or sensory related feeding difficulties. Some of the common difficulties we see and treat include:
  • Speech - Unclear speech, problems making particular sounds, leaving sounds off of words, substituting or changing sounds (e.g., saying "tup" for "cup" or "das" for "gas"). We also support children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).

  • Receptive language - Difficulty understanding concepts, questions or following instructions at home or at daycare.

  • Expressive language - Difficulty expressing themselves, using correct grammar to form sentences, and a wide vocabulary, telling stories that make sense to the listener.

  • Literacy - Difficulty grasping early literacy skills or keeping up with reading and/or writing at school. We are trained to deliver the Sounds Write synthetic phonics approach when providing literacy intervention.

  • Pragmatics - Difficulty making friends, understanding emotions, following social cues, understanding the rules of play, interacting appropriately with other children or adults.

  • Stuttering - repetition or lengthening of sounds, repetition of words, demonstrating blocking or 'getting stuck' on their words. We are trained to deliver the Lidcombe program for children under 6 years who stutter.

  • Late talkers or developmental delays - helping younger children learn to find their voice, first words and phrases, and the value of communicating. Parent education is key for this age group - Teaching language stimulation strategies to use with your child and ways to maximise play and engagement opportunities to support their development.

  • Eating - We can provide a feeding assessment to determine whether your child's feeding difficulties are due to oral motor, swallowing or sensory difficulties. Therapy for feeding difficulties is provided in collaboration with our Occupational Therapist, typically through our group Food Clinic sessions which are based on the SOS Approach for picky eaters. See Group Sessions for further information.
